Re: Information on Water Softeners.
What is Hard Water?
Classification of Hard Water.
Water is described as being HARD when it contains the minerals calcium and magnesium.
Chemically these are in the form of mineral salts usually bicarbonates.
Water hardness is measured in milligrams which equals parts per million (ppm).
Milligrams Per Litre: MG/L or PPM
Less than 17.1 soft
17.1 to 60 slightly hard
60 to 120 moderately hard
120 to 180 hard
180 and over very hard
Adelaide water varies in hardness from 70 ppm to 170 ppm.
On an average to calculate the efficiency of a water softener we work on the water being supplied at 150 ppm as calcium carbonates.
What are the benefits of soft water?
Dissolved calcium and magnesium minerals cause the “hardness” in the water.
If left untreated, these minerals can have a distinct effect on a lifestyle which many take for granted.
Heating hard water causes the calcium and magnesium minerals to “scale” thus forming build-up on hot water elements and blocking hot water pipes.
This means an increase in service and maintenance costs, ruining any equipment that heats water and increasing running costs. Instead of “lathering” with soap and detergents, hard water causes the soap to form curds which in turn causes staining on clothes, and smearing of glass, cutlery, plates, tiles and baths. Hard water soap residue on the skin can cause irritation and gives the hair a dull, lifeless appearance.
What does a water softener do?
The main objective of a water softener is to remove calcium and magnesium (hardness salts) in the water.
This application goes through a process called Ion Exchange.
Hard water flows through the resin in a water softener and the ion exchange resin absorbs the calcium and magnesium ions and releases soluble sodium (soft salts) ions into the water.
The resin can only absorb a certain amount of calcium and magnesium before becoming saturated, therefore needs regenerating. Regeneration is carried out by passing a strong sodium solution through the softener, releasing the calcium and magnesium ions to be flushed to the drain.
The resin is then recharged for normal service conditions
The maintenance time and costs of having hard water definitely outweighs the cost of maintaining and running a water softener. Unfortunately the effects of hard water can go unnoticed for quite awhile, however they do shorten the life of all appliances.
A water softener can be a great asset to have in the home or in the work place, for some industries however a water softener is a necessity especially in levels of water hardness (calcium and magnesium) are high. Below are some reasons why.
Saves on plumbing.
Soft water prevents pipe scale which clogs pipes, reduces water flow and leads to expensive repair bills.
Protects water-using appliances. It prevents formation of hard water scale which can lead to malfunctioning of appliances.
Hot water service using softened water adds longer life to your water heating by minimizing the scale buildup created by hard water minerals, less energy is required (17% to 21%) to heat water in tanks without a scale build up.
Whiter, brighter clothes. Soft water eliminates the soap curd that clings to clothes. By rinsing away the soil-holding soap scum, it makes clothes really clean and gives them that “like new” look.
Luxurious shampoos. Soft water floods away shampoo and dirt films and leaves the hair clean and manageable.
More refreshing baths. Soft water cleans the pores thoroughly. Rinses away soap residues that cause chapping and redness. Easier dishwashing. Dishes and glassware sparkle. No dull, sticky film. More flavorable foods. Natural food flavour is retained because hard water minerals aren’t cooked in.
Coffee and tea taste better too. Containers can be kept completely clean. More efficient cleaning. Soft water floats away dirt and grime, makes dozens of cleaning chores easier.
Saves up to 70% on soaps. All the soap is used for washing. Lesser quantities are necessary in soft water. Detergents go further too. Saves on clothing. Institutional tests show that clothing washing in soft water lasts up to 113 times longer.
